• It takes a village to build a well. Residents of the Khamsadegaig Camp for internally displaced persons look down a well they built with help from the Darfur Emergency Response Operation, a joint program of Caritas Internationalis and Action by Churches Together (ACT). The Catholic and Protestant aid networks have pooled their resources since 2004 in order to help some of the 2.5 million people displaced by violent conflict in Sudan's western Darfur region.

 • Women carry water home from a well in Geles, an Arab village in Darfur where an ecumenical coalition has provided wells and a variety of other services. While the Darfur Emergency Response Operation is focused primarily on responding to the needs of Darfur's internally displaced people, most of them Africans, it also is helping Arab villages, many of them host communities for displaced camps, as a contribution toward reconciliation and peace. The Darfur Emergency Response Operation is a joint effort of Caritas Internationalis, the Rome-based network of Catholic aid agencies, and Action by Churches Together (ACT), the Geneva-based Protestant relief network. Since 2003, as many as 400,000 people have been killed and 2,500,000 displaced by government-sanctioned violence against African farming communities in the region.

 • Displaced people and the local host community work together, with help from ACT-Caritas, to build a new well near Deleij. Water is a critical resource in the Darfur region, and making it more available to all contributes to better relations between different social groups.

 • As the water table level continues to drop, many wells in southern Honduras have dried out, like this one in El Burillo, Valle. Communities have deepened their hand-dug wells up to three times, others have drilled deeper wells, up to 60m deep, with special rigs, but the drought has already lasted seven years in this dry corridor of Central America and is predicted to continue due to climate change. Here villagers help deepen a well.

 • A new well was drilled by IMA/Tearfund in this community, Tamende, Beni. Here the villagers and engineers that are building the well fill jerrycans while the contruction of the plinth and faucet area is underway. Clean water for drinking underpins health initiatives, and during the Ebola crisis in North Kivu IMA pushed to strengthen the foundations of preventative health care in the region by drilling wells and building reservoirs in communities around Beni and Butembo, North Kivu, Congo DRC. • Mohamed Al-Shawish, a 5-year old Palestinian boy, waters trees on a farm in Johor Al-Deek, a section of the Bureij refugee camp in Gaza. The water comes from a well and water pump provided by Dan Church Aid--a member of the ACT Alliance--to replace a well and pump destroyed by the Israeli military. Water resources in the Gaza Strip are critically insufficient. Almost two-thirds of Gaza's water is used for agriculture, but farmers are often forced to use salty and polluted water from shallow unlicensed wells..

 • Hauling on a rope to pull a well-digger out of the well. Most wells in San Francisco Libre have dried up, those with any water have to be deepened. The drought in this area is so severe that thousands of cattle have perished, and human life is becoming increasingly vulnerable. Crops have failed, animals have died, and the water is drying up. The drought is believed to be an effect of climate change.

 • Workers carry pipe as they drill a well on April 7, 2017, in Rumading, a village in South Sudan's Lol State where more than 5,000 people, displaced by drought and conflict, remain in limbo. In early 2017, they set out walking for Sudan, seeking better conditions, but were stopped from crossing the border. They remain camped out under the trees at Rumading, eating wild leaves as the rainy season approaches.

In early April, Norwegian Church Aid, a member of the ACT Alliance, began drilling the well in the informal settlement and distributed sorghum, beans and cooking oil to the most vulnerable families.

The ACT Alliance is carrying out the emergency assistance in coordination with government officials and the local Catholic parish.

 • A girl pumps water from a well provided by the Catholic Church in Leu, a village in the contested Abyei region along the border between Sudan and South Sudan. The village was looted and burned in 2011 when soldiers and militias from the northern Republic of Sudan swept through the area, chasing out more than 100,000 Dinka Ngok residents. A few thousand families have returned since northern combatants withdrew in 2012, yet their life is precarious. In Leu, the church rehabilitated a clinic and drilled this well. For political and logistical reasons, the Catholic Church is one of the few organizations willing to openly accompany the people of Abyei during these uncertain times.

 • A woman pumps water at a well built by World Renew partners Christian Extension Services. The village has no electricity and is not on a treated water network. The building of the well and pump brought a protected and convenient water supply to the village, reducing water-borne diseases and an enormous amount of carrying water that is a job done by women.
The small village of Seduya, Koinadugu is in a remote district of Kabala province, in northern Sierra Leone, an area heavily affected by the civil war in the 1990s. Working with partner Christian Extension Services, World Renew is helping the village with agricultural trainining to improve harvests and with sanitation and clean water supply.

 • With help from her 8-year old daughter Atap, Atouc Dut carries home water from a well in Malek Miir, a village in South Sudan's Lol State where a persistent drought has destroyed crops and left people hungry. A local partner of Christian Aid, a member of the ACT Alliance, drilled the well and has provided food vouchers to hungry families, including Dut and her husband and four children. With food vouchers instead of bulk food, beneficiaries were able to buy the exact food they wanted, while at the same time supporting local traders and markets.

 • Arnulfo José Espinoza Gonzalez is hauled up by a rope from a well he is digging deeper. Most wells in San Francisco Libre in Nicaragua have dried up, those with any water have to be deepened. The drought in this area is so severe that thousands of cattle have perished, and human life is becoming increasingly vulnerable. Crops have failed, animals have died, and the water is drying up. The drought is believed to be an effect of climate change.

 • A displaced girl waits to fill her water containers at a well in Agok, a town in the contested Abyei region where tens of thousands of people fled in 2011 after an attack by soldiers and militias from the northern Republic of Sudan on most parts of Abyei. Although the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement called for residents of Abyei--which sits on the border between Sudan and South Sudan--to hold a referendum on whether they wanted to align with the north or the newly independent South Sudan, the government in Khartoum and northern-backed Misseriya nomads, excluded from voting as they only live part of the year in Abyei, blocked the vote and attacked the majority Dinka Ngok population. The African Union has proposed a new peace plan, including a referendum to be held in October 2013, but it has been rejected by the Misseriya and Khartoum.
