• Junio Simon holds his 3-year old son Carlos, and he poses with his wife Anaivis Machado and their 17-year old son Josue in the Plaza Benito Juarez in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, on March 3, 2017. They left their home in Santa Clara, Cuba, bound for the United States, but are now waiting on the U.S.-Mexico border, caught in limbo by the elimination in January of the infamous “wet foot, dry foot” policy of the United States. They are not allowed to enter the U.S. yet don't want to return to Cuba. Many of the city's churches have become temporary shelters for the immigrants, and congregations rotate responsibility for feeding the Cubans. Such solidarity from ordinary Mexicans is being tested these days, as not only are the Cubans stuck at the border, but the U.S. has stepped up deportations of Mexican nationals, while at the same time detaining many undocumented workers from other nations and simply dumping them on the US-Mexico border. Machado's husband is a member of the Methodist Church in Cuba.

 • As people from two villages wait for an emergency humanitarian food distribution during the drought and famine in western Uganda, a group perform a short drama about what happens in a family when there's not enough food.

When there's not enough food to go around in a family, children fight over small scraps of food, sometimes food is shared equally, sometimes people sacrifice their own food to allow children to eat, sometimes difficult decisions are taken, over who will survive. The dynamics of what happens in a family, extended family and community can be emotionally as well as physically devastating.

Some 35,000 people live in the camp, protected by UN peacekeeping troops. They were displaced from Malakal following the outbreak of a civil war in 2013. The armed conflict has a strong element of ethnic tension, and the mostly Shilluk and Nuer residents of the camp fear for their security from the largely Dinka population that has moved into their former town.

Yet more than 40,000 Dinka Ngok have since returned with support from Caritas South Sudan, which has drilled wells, built houses, opened clinics and provided seeds and tools for the returnees.

 • A woman waits with her child to be seen in an outreach clinic in the Rhino Refugee Camp in northern Uganda. As of April 2017, the camp held almost 87,000 refugees from South Sudan, and more people were arriving daily. About 1.8 million people have fled South Sudan since civil war broke out there at the end of 2013. About 900,000 have sought refuge in Uganda.
The clinic was sponsored by Global Refuge International, which receives support from the Global Health Program of The United Methodist Church.
