The village was struck by both a 2004 tsunami and a 2005 earthquake, leaving houses destroyed and lives disrupted. The ACT Alliance helped villagers here to construct new homes and latrines, build a potable water system, open a clinic and schools and get their lives going once again. For the residents of Tugala, the post-disaster mantra of "build back better" became a reality with help from the ACT Alliance.

Diwata, the community has become the center of an international struggle between small scale miners and large international mining corporations. The military has been ordered by the government to protect the interests of the large mining companies, and frequently engages in repression and harassment of opponents of large scale mining. To improve its image in the community, soldiers have been carrying out civil assistance missions such as this in an effort to win hearts and minds among residents of poor communities..

  • Children get dressed for school in the morning in Lukaya, Uganda, where the Good Samaritan Women's Project has helped rural women improve their financial literacy, thus improving the quality of life for the women, many of whom are widows who also care for children who lost their parents to AIDS. The program was funded by the Call to Prayer and Self-Denial of United Methodist Women. These children belong to an extended family, where a widow with three children has adopted four children of her sister who died.

As a result, the more than 25,000 Palestinians in Madaba have been joined by more than 6,000 Syrians. The  Department of Service for Palestinian Refugees of the Middle East Council of Churches, a member of the ACT Alliance, provides a variety of services here, including medical care.<br />

Many African villages like this have been hard hit by disease, including HIV and AIDS, leaving children to be cared for by relatives. Yet this village has also been hard hit by drought in recent years, leading to chronic food insecurity, especially during the "hunger season," when farmers are waiting for the harvest. In addition to providing emergency food, the ACT Alliance is working with farmers in this village to switch to alternative, drought-resistant crops, as well as installing an irrigation system and utilizing other improved techniques to increase agricultural yields.
