• Aluel Yuot ties sticks together as she constructs a shelter in the internally displaced persons camp in Turalei, South Sudan. Families started arriving here shortly after fighting broke out in December 2013, and new families continued to arrive in March 2014 as fighting continued. Many are living in the open and under trees. The ACT Alliance is providing the displaced families and the host communities affected by their presence with a variety of support, including new wells. In the back is her husband, James Biar.

 • Jesus the Political Prisoner.

Jesús García, Carrizal, Santa Elena, La Paz.

"When my father was assassinated my mother looked at how she’d been left with no help. She got sick and just died. One of my brothers was disabled. He also died of pneumonia. The rest of us survived somehow. I was orphaned quite young, so I couldn’t study. We all had to work to survive.

Poverty gives you a lot of ideas about how to survive. I worked making henequen twine hammocks. Then nylon fibre arrived, so we made hammocks from nylon. I’ve also worked in agriculture. I’ve had jobs with the government. I was an elected official of the municipality. I worked in the National Registry; I helped transcribe registers of births and marriages across the country. I was nominated coordinator of the Land Commission. I’m a bricklayer and a carpenter. I built this house with my sons. We made every adobe and the doors and windows. We’ve suffered a lot but we’ve worked hard and God has been good with us.

During the war with El Salvador we were afraid. The warplanes would fly over but the Salvadorean Army never arrived. Our patron saint Santiago protected us.

We’re Catholics, like our parents and grandparents, and our children are also following our tradition.
I was a political prisoner because I was a lay preacher. I coordinated 180 other preachers in Santa Elena and Yarula and Nahuaterique. Our priests asked us to speak the truth, and that’s what we did.

I spent 17 months as a political prisoner in the Central Penitentiary in Tegucigalpa.

They came at two in the morning to take me. There were a lot of soldiers. They smashed up everything in the house.

At first no one knew where they’d taken us. We were disappeared. At that time lots of people disappeared for ever, or maybe they’d find your body in a ditch. It was dangerous. A lot of people died like that. Our families were asking the army to give us back, at least to hand over the dead bodies. We were held in the
