• Saru Shrestha poses in her small shop in Sanogoan, Nepal, where she earns money to support her family in the wake of the April 2015 earthquake that ravaged Nepal.

The Newar community where she lives was particularly hard hit, but it has been helped by the Lutheran World Federation, a member of the ACT Alliance. The ACT Alliance has provided blankets, tents, and livelihood assistance, including a cash grant to help Shrestha jump start her business, and is helping villagers form the tens of thousands of cement blocks they will need to construct permanent housing.

Born into a family of 10, Shrestha had to leave school after the earthquake to help care for her younger brothers and sisters. Using the small grant, Shrestha established a shop selling tea, snacks and sweets. “At first it was hard, especially arguing with people who buy things on credit. But I feel less shy now,” said Shrestha, who uses most of the income to pay for school fees for her siblings. Some of it she sets apart. “My dream is to open a second shop, selling cosmetics,” said the young entrepreneur.
