  • Dayana Makazi sits under an insecticide-treated bed net in her family's home in Goma, a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The mosquito net was provided by IMA World Health as part of its work against malaria, which has long plagued the region. The DRC is the second-leading country in the world for malaria cases. An outbreak of Ebola in the region in 2018 was accompanied by a huge spike in malaria cases. The two diseases often present similar symptoms in their early stages, making both more difficult to diagnose and treat.

  • A man repairs a net on Jinamoc Island, part of the municipality of Basey in the Philippines province of Samar that was hit hard by Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013. Known locally as Yolanda, the storm left most of the island's boats, nets, and houses destroyed. The community received a few new boats from the government, and material for new nets from a media conglomerate. The ACT Alliance has been providing a variety of assistance to survivors, including cash for work and temporary housing, and is planning a long-term rehabilitation program with residents that will include permanent housing, schools, agricultural development, livelihood activities, and water and sanitation facilities.

  • A Wichi indigenous man repairs his fishing net in Santa Victoria Este, Argentina. The Wichi in this area, traditional hunters and gatherers, have struggled for decades to recover land that has been systematically stolen from them by cattleraisers and large agricultural plantations. After years of negotiation supported by Church World Service, a landmark 2014 agreement will divide the land in this region between indigenous communities and settlers, guaranteeing the survival of the Wichi.

DanChurchAid, a member of the ACT Alliance, is helping families in Akobo with fishing hooks and twine for nets, along with other food and livelihood projects aimed at lowering vulnerability and increasing food security. It carries out that program in partnership with Nile Hope, a South Sudanese organization. <br />

  • Mou Leu Chol covers her 2-year old son Yuel with a tattered mosquito net in Bor, a city in South Sudan's Jonglei State that has been the scene of fierce fighting in recent months between the country's military and anti-government rebels. After fighting broke out in mid December 2013, control of the town changed hands four times in a few weeks. ACT Alliance members were among the first humanitarian agencies to enter the city in January 2014, and are providing services to thousands of people who are cautiously returning home to the troubled city. Chol came to Bor in March 2014 to escape continued fighting in nearby Duk County. She and her husband assembled their new home out of the scraps of building materials they found here. She will soon replace her old mosquito net with a new one she received in a household package given to her by Dan Church Aid and the Lutheran World Federation, both members of the ACT Alliance. The package also contained plastic sheeting, cooking pots, a machete, mats, and other essential items.

  • Irman Baeha, a fisherman in the village of Moawo on the Indonesian island of Nias, inspects his fishing net. His house was flattened by the 2004 tsunami, and he and his family later moved into a new house constructed by YEU, a member of the ACT Alliance. Yeu built 72 houses in the community. With foundations of cement, they are more resilient than the pre-tsunami houses which were built entirely of wood. YEU also helped the community members restart their local economy, and assisted the community as it planted mangroves to protect the shoreline and revitalize their fishing industry. Nias also suffered a devastating earthquake in 2005.
