Rev. Géza Laborczi of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation in Nyíregyháza Kertváros, and director of the diaconal institution Oltalom looks at a map of Ukrainian border areas in northeast Hungary, where his church is active in supporting refugees at the border crossings. With the recent influx of refugees arriving from the east after the Russian invasion of neighbouring Ukraine, the congregation works hard to accommodate and support people arriving in the city. The Vama Siret border crossing connects northeast Romania with Ukraine. Located north of Siret and further in the south the city of Suceava, the crossing connects Romania with the Ukrainian village of Terebleche and further north the city of Chernivtsi. Following the invasion of Ukraine by Russian military starting on 24 February 2022, close to half a million refugees have fled across the Ukrainian border into Romania. In the past 24 hours, government figures indicate more than 50,000 people have crossed the border in search of refuge, an estimated 20 percent of whom are expected to stay in Romania, rather than transit into other European countries. • Ubiratã de Souza Dias, right, show on a map where planned and existing dams are on local rivers.

The Ribeira de Iguape is the largest river in São Paulo State, 470kms long and is unusual in the region because it has no dams on it, but dams are planned here. Organised opposition to the dams has stopped a dam being built at Tijuco Alto already, and is actively opposed to the building of another three proposed dams in the area.

The Movement by People Affected by Dams, (Movimento dos Atingidos por Baragems, MAB) says that the construction of dams and the flooding of valleys forces the displacement of people particularly indigenous groups and quilombolos (members of the 5,000+ historical rural communities begun by escaped slaves) and destoys livelihoods. Many of those most affected are indigenous people, quilombolos, poor farmers, landless workers, fishermen, who are not consulted, yet their lives are affected or their livelihoods ruiined by dams.

Because of climate change we have an increase in extreme weather events, droughts and floods, and new records are being set for heavy rainfall, We can get so much rain that dams can collapse. Disasters are quite rare because flood gates can be opened, but opening floodgates also causes flooding, it can cause damage and destruction of building and towns and crops, it can ruin livelihoods and kill people. In São Paulo state, because of heavy rainfall, floodgates were recently opened on nearby Capivari river at the UHE Perigot de Souza dam, flooding Eldorado and other towns. The company that owns the dam (Copel - Companhia Paranaense de Energia) denies responsability for the damages.
Sustainable renewable energy is preferable to emission-creating fossil fuel burning, but the human, cultural and environmental cost of giant hydroelectric projects is high and needs to be considered much more carefully. Successive governments in Brazil have made decisions to hand over land to privately-owned energy companies, and their main m

He rides his bike, for example, with his sister's help. She perches on the back and signals him which way to steer by pinching his shoulder. If she pinches his right shoulder, for example, he goes right. The harder the pinch, the sharper the turn.

The Wichi, who traditionally survived as hunter-gatherers, have struggled against the systematic expropriation of their land for over a century by mestizo cattleraisers who migrated into the region from elsewhere in Argentina. In 2014, the two groups finally agreed on a division of the land which recognizes the traditional land rights of the indigenous, and which resettles many mestizo families onto non-indigenous land. Church World Service has worked as a partner with local residents as they negotiated the landmark settlement.

 • 16 November 2018, San José de León, Mutatá, Antioquia, Colombia: “The difference is in our everyday life,” says Joni Pertuz as he feeds a school of 300 Tilapia fish just outside his house. “To not have to get up at six in the morning and check the map to see where the enemy is. Now things have changed. We get up in the morning to look after our kids, to check on the animals that we have. But what has not changed is our sense of collective. We stay united.” Joni is one of some 10 families who have their own stocks of fish, apart from the community collective's larger schools of farmed fish. Following the 2016 peace treaty between FARC and the Colombian government, a group of ex-combatant families have purchased and now cultivate 36 hectares of land in the territory of San José de León, municipality of Mutatá in Antioquia, Colombia. A group of 27 families first purchased the lot of land in San José de León, moving in from nearby Córdoba to settle alongside the 50-or-so families of farmers already living in the area. Today, 50 ex-combatant families live in the emerging community, which hosts a small restaurant, various committees for community organization and development, and which cultivates the land through agriculture, poultry and fish farming. Though the community has come a long way, many challenges remain on the way towards peace and reconciliation. The two-year-old community, which does not yet have a name of its own, is located in the territory of San José de León in Urabá, northwest Colombia, a strategically important corridor for trade into Central America, with resulting drug trafficking and arms trade still keeping armed groups active in the area.

 • One of several volunteers building a new community center in the Suburban neighborhood of Rodriguez, Rizal, in the Philippines. Most of the community's families were relocated here from other area of Manila and the nearby countryside to make way for urban renewal projects or to move them out of harm's way. Yet the new community was hit hard by Typhoon Ketsana in 2009, and Christian Aid, a member of the ACT Alliance, provided emergency relief supplies. Over the years since, with help from Christian Aid and other groups, community members have organized themselves and engaged in a process of disaster risk reduction, including identifying and mapping high-risk zones and evacuation routes in their area. Christian Aid has also assisted with financial and technical support for income generating livelihood projects and community enterprises.
