Yuliana's father is one of 3,500 members of the coop. Any coop member, their partner or children can take part in the superior education programme.

The river has dried up in recent years, along with many other rivers in the region, this is thought to be partly from stripping of vegetation and forest cover in the watersheds that feed the rivers in the south, and also due to the influence of climate change. The IPCC predicted a likelihood of reduced rainfall in the region. Agriculture has already been failing in the area for eight years because of drought conditions.

The Fraternidad de Presbiteriales Mayas works with women and families in this Mam-speaking Maya community, providing education, credit, health care, and empowerment. Many of the women in this group weave and embroider, using credit from the Fraternidad to buy materials they need to produce a product they then sell, utilizing the income to better their family’s quality of living.

A peace process that began in 2006 has brought hope to the two million people in northern Uganda who were displaced by the long war with the Lord's Resistance Army. In the village of Amuca, families have returned and are harvesting crops, building homes, and enjoying the first peace they've had for more than 20 years. The Lutheran World Federation, supported by ACT International, installed a well for this village, and will continue to accompany them as they experience peace.
