The corn grew initially then dried in a critical period as the corn grains should have developed. The whole crop was lost. Climate change has brought unpredictable and unreliable patterns of rainfall, the rain doesn't come when it's needed, and sometimes six month's of rain come in a week and wash away the topsoil.

Some 35,000 people live in the camp, protected by UN peacekeeping troops. They were displaced from Malakal following the outbreak of a civil war in 2013. The armed conflict has a strong element of ethnic tension, and the mostly Shilluk and Nuer residents of the camp fear for their security from the largely Dinka population that has moved into their former town.

Many of the women in the community weave and embroider, using credit from the Fraternidad to buy materials they need to produce a product they then sell, utilizing the income to better their family’s quality of living.

The project is supported by the Evangelic Lutheran Church of America and provides the community groups with a solar-powered pump that brings up water from 45m deep and a drip irrigation system for the cultivation of maize that they grow collectively in the village, as a response to the prolonged drought and many failed harvests the region is suffering. A successful crop of corn is being grown in the background.

An initiative of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Pikit, the spaces for peace are villages where residents have told both the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Philippine military to desist from activity within the community. Residents also studied peacebuilding and conflict resolution,  and have made special efforts to increase interfaith dialogue and harmony.
