• Members of the Arrow Boys, a self-defense militia, in the village of Riimenze, in Southern Sudan's Western Equatoria State. The men patrol the forest around the village, especially at night, on the look out for the Lord's Resistance Army, which has displaced tens of thousands in recent months along the border area. Many believe the northern Sudan government is behind the attacks in its desire to destabilize the south in the period leading to a January 2011 referendum on secession. NOTE: In July 2011 Southern Sudan became the independent country of South Sudan.

 • Boys roll bicycle wheels through a camp for more than 5,000 displaced people in Riimenze, in South Sudan's Gbudwe State, what was formerly Western Equatoria. Families here were displaced at the beginning of 2017, as fighting between government soldiers and rebels escalated.

Two Catholic groups, Caritas Austria and Solidarity with South Sudan, have played key roles in assuring that the displaced families here have food, shelter and water.
The camp formed around the Catholic Church in Riimenze as people fled violence in nearby villages for what they perceived as the safety offered by the church.

 • 19 February 2020, Amman, Jordan: A group of boys make use of a room called 'Spaces for Creativity' at the Al Areen Secondary School for Boys in the Al Jeeza district. The room has emerged through a project by the Lutheran World Federation, whereby the school buildings and classrooms have been refurbished, and a school initiative has introduced 'Spaces for Creativity' as a way of nurturing students' creative and thinking skills. This type of learning environment is otherwise rare in Jordanian public shools. The Al Areen Secondary school teaches boys from 4th - 12th grade, most of them Jordanian, but a few also of other nationalities. [Image captured on assignment for the Lutheran World Federation, whose member churches and partners can use it free of charge to report about the LWF’s work, with credit to ’LWF/Albin Hillert’ upon publication.]

 • Once displaced by terrorist attacks by the Lord's Resistance Army, farmers in Gangura, South Sudan, are once again farming their fields with help from Caritas, which has provided seeds, tools and technical support, and with protection from the Arrow Boys, local self-defense militia groups established to defend against LRA attacks. Erisha Dowdy is a leader of the local unit of the Arrow Boys, and, carrying a homemade shotgun, here escorts other residents of Gangura to work in their fields. The LRA attacked Gangura in early March, 2015, kidnapping 13 people. The Arrow Boys eventually drove off the attackers, killing one and losing one of their own members. The farmers group is supported by the diocese of Tombura-Yambio and Caritas Austria.

 • 24 May 2022, Manychskaya, Russia: Two refugee boys from the Donbas area of Ukraine sit down for a game of chess in their room at the Russian Orthodox Children’s Shelter in honor of Saint Paraskeva in the village of Manychskaya, in southwest Russia. The shelter currently offers accommodation to a few dozen refugees from the Donbas region of Ukraine, in addition to its regular work in housing and accompanying so-called social orphans — children whose parents are alive and known, but who are currently unable to take care of their children on their own. Following the eruption of war in Ukraine, many refugees from the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine have taken refuge across the border in neighbouring Russia. Located close to the border, the Shakhty diocese (Russian Orthodox Church, Moscow Patriarchate) receives refugees mainly from the area of Donbas, the majority of whom are women and children. Close to a million people — most of them women and children — have fled from Ukraine to Russia according to mid-May figures from the United Nations (UNHCR) following the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February. [PLEASE NOTE: This image was captured on assignment with the World Council of Churches and ACT Alliance, visiting Russia upon invitation from the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).]

 • Two boys walk to school in Tugala, a village on the Indonesian island of Nias. The village was struck by both a 2004 tsunami and a 2005 earthquake, leaving houses destroyed and lives disrupted. The ACT Alliance helped villagers here to construct new homes and latrines, build a potable water system, open a clinic and schools and get their lives going once again. For the residents of Tugala, the post-disaster mantra of "build back better" became a reality with help from the ACT Alliance.
