• At a September 21, 2022, memorial service marking the 50th anniversary of martial law in the Philippines, Bishop Ciriaco Francisco, the Resident Bishop of the Manila Area, holds a sign supporting the Rev. Glofie Baluntong, a United Methodist pastor who has been charged with attempted murder in a case she and her supporters believe was invented to intimidate her.

During the memorial service, participants placed flowers in memory of church activists killed during martial law, which was imposed in 1972 by President Ferdinand Marcos and effectively lasted until a pro-democracy uprising drove Marcos from office in 1986. Marcos' son was elected president in May, and rising repression has many church leaders concerned about a return to the past.
