The church is a center for refugees mostly from Zimbabwe who have been met at times with rejection and xenophobic violence. MSF established the clinic in December 2007 to provide health care to the thousands of refugees who live in and around the church. Ms. Chigara, a refugee from Zimbabwe, has lived in South Africa since 2007, and brought her baby to the clinic for a rash. Dr. Mukanzila is also Zimbabwean. A June 2009 MSF report claimed Zimbabwean refugees are being turned away from South African hospitals, despite official policies that outlaw discrimination against foreigners. .
