Military civil assistance mission in conflictive gold rush community
Add to Cart Add to Lightbox DownloadSoldiers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines play games with children in Diwalwal, a remote mining community on the Philippines' southern island of Mindanao. Also known as Mt. Diwata, the community has become the center of an international struggle between small scale miners and large international mining corporations. The military has been ordered by the government to protect the interests of the large mining companies, and frequently engages in repression and harassment of opponents of large scale mining. To improve its image in the community, soldiers have been carrying out civil assistance missions such as this in an effort to win hearts and minds among residents of poor communities..
