Refugees provide self-policing in huge Kenya camp
Add to Cart Add to Lightbox DownloadAdow Ibrahim Ali (right) and Fatuma Isaac Ar (second from right), Community Peace and Security Team members in the Dagahaley refugee camp, part of the huge Dadaab refugee complex in northeastern Kenya, talk with a woman about difficulties in the neighborhood. Already the world's world's largest refugee settlement, Dadaab has swelled in recent weeks with tens of thousands of recent arrivals fleeing drought in Somalia. The Lutheran World Federation, a member of the ACT Alliance, is manager of the camp, and sponsors the Community Peace and Security Teams in all three Dadaab camps. The teams, composed of volunteer refugees, mediate many ordinary conflicts, but refer violent crimes such as rape or murder to Kenyan police.
