Hundreds of gay rights activists demonstrated on May 1 in Fort Worth, Texas, in favor of full inclusion of gay and lesbian persons within the United Methodist Church. The demonstrators interrupted the denomination's 2008 General Conference, where a majority of delegates had earlier reaffirmed the church's policy that homosexuality is "incompatible with Christian teaching." The demonstrators covered the central altar table with black cloth to symbolize their grief and mourning over the church's decision.
