Sri Lanka recovers from devastating tsunami
Add to Cart Add to Lightbox DownloadThe Rev. Nadarajah Arulnathan, a Methodist pastor in Passikudah, Sri Lanka, stands in front of his church, damaged by the South Asian tsunami. All around the church, homes were smashed and land mines washed loose from a nearby army base. As a result, many decaying bodies mixed in the debris had yet to be removed. Arulnathan, who lost 18 relatives to the disaster, led a local committee of church leaders coordinating the response in the region of the National Christian Council of Sri Lanka, a member of Action by Churches Together (ACT) International. Churches and NGOs provided almost all of the relief to tsunami victims in the area. The December 26, 2004, tsunami left devastation behind along most of the island nation's coastline.
