Wheelchairs aid mobility in Zimbabwe

Dominik Tengani sits in the front passenger seat of a kombi near his home in Kuwadzana, Zimbabwe. Tengani is vice chair of the Spinal Injuries Association of Zimbabwe, which supports and advocates for the rights of people living with spinal injuries. He says doctors have been unable to diagnose the cause of his medical condition. He uses an appropriately-designed and fitted wheelchair provided by the Jairos Jiri Association with support from CBM-US. Kombi drivers often refuse to allow people in wheelchairs to ride, or charge them extra for taking their wheelchair along. In Tengani's case, his wheelchair disassembles, yet he is forced to ride with the main frame of the chair over his shoulders.
