Sister D'Costa came to the war-torn African country under the auspices of Solidarity with Southern Sudan, an international network of Catholic groups supporting Southern Sudan with educational personnel and prayer. Here Sister D'Costa travels in a boat to Detang, a small village across the Upper Nile River from Malakal, accompanied by teacher Michael Lam (center), one of her students. NOTE: In July 2011 Southern Sudan became the independent country of South Sudan.
