Following the eruption of war in Ukraine, many refugees from the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine have taken refuge across the border in neighbouring Russia. Located close to the border, Shakhty diocese receives refugees mainly from the Luhansk area of Donbas, the majority of whom are women and children. The aid centre serves as a collection and distribution point for aid to refugees arriving from neighbouring Ukraine, close to a million of whom have fled to Russia according to mid-May figures from the United Nations (UNHCR) following the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.
