Sofija arrived in Poland with her sister Liliia (14) and their mother, Katiia Kharytoniuk, from Uman, Ukraine in March 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After three months staying in the home of a Polish family, the three now live in a building at the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland parish in Bytom. The family has two rooms for themselves, and share a kitchen, bathroom and a playing room for children with a couple of other families from Ukraine. Katiia is an economist, and before fleeing the war, worked as a sales manager at a factory manufacturing furniture. The father of the family remains in Ukraine, as at times of war, men aged 18-60 are not allowed to leave the country, under martial law.
