Rasheed Shervan, a Syrian refugee, sits on his bed in the Krnjaca Center for Refugees on the outskirts of Belgrade, Serbia. A chemist, he fled his home in Aleppo, Syria, when bombing destroyed his home. He then spent three years in a refugee camp in Izmir, Turkey, but fled after participating in a protest about the conditions in which refugees are forced to live. On his way to western Europe, he injured his leg when jumping from a train in Belgrade.
