A new leg in Nuba Mountains

Add to Cart Add to Lightbox Download

Jany Mahmed (left) and Lawrence Angatai help Yusef Ali try on a new leg in the prosthetics department of the Mother of Mercy Hospital in Gidel, a village in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. The area is controlled by the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North, and frequently attacked by the military of Sudan. The Catholic hospital is the only referral hospital in the war-torn area, and has dealt with many amputations of people injured by bombs, artillery, and gunshot wounds. Ali, a soldier, had his leg amputated in October, 2017, after he was shot during combat with government troops.
