Disappeared Jesus.
Manuel de Jesús Bautista Salvador, 22, was arrested by the Public Order Military Police (PMOP) on the 3rd of December 2017 in Naco, Cortés.
The arrest took place during a period of protests alleging electoral fraud and against the re-election of Juan Orlando Hernandez as president of the country.
The government responded to the opposition protests with military force, police, and with a curfew for ten days, which began on the first of December 2017.
During that time, more than 700 people were arrested during the curfew and at least eight people were killed, shot with live rounds by State security forces.
On the 3rd of December at 7:30pm, Manuel de Jesús Bautista Salvador was detained, along with a friend, by the Military Police. The curfew had begun at 6pm.
They were beaten heavily and then pepper-sprayed so they couldn’t see. They were taken away with two other detainees who were already in the Military Police patrol vehicle. The vehicle arrived at a checkpoint manned by several soldiers and, on arrival, Manuel de Jesús jumped from the vehicle. At that moment, the other detainees heard shots.
The other detainees were released the following afternoon, on December the 4th.
Manuel de Jesús’s family members notified the authorities that he had disappeared on the 5th of December.
The other detainees who were witnesses to his arrest do not want to make declarations, almost certainly out of fear or because of threats.
Despite petitions and denouncements by the Honduran Committee of the Families of Detained and Disappeared, Manuel de Jesús Bautista is still ‘disappeared’ and there has been no investigation into his whereabouts.
