A delegate walks by demonstrators wearing rainbow gags on May 14 at the 2016 United Methodist General Conference in Portland, Ore. The protest against what demonstrators believe is an attempt to silence LGBTQ voices during the conference took place at the end of the morning's plenary business session.
The United Methodist Church does not authorize the ordination of "self-avowed practicing homosexuals," but activists have for years demonstrated in favor of change at the quadrennial gathering of the world-wide denomination.
