18 October 2022, Bytom, Poland: An angel bearing the colours of the Ukrainian flag sits on a chest of drawers, as 14-year-old Liliia from Ukraine spends her evening studying in her bedroom. The family, made up of Lilliia and her mother Katiia Kharytoniuk her younger sister Sofija (5) arrived as refugees in Poland from Uman, Ukraine, in March 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After three months staying in the home of a Polish family, the family now lives in a building at the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland parish in Bytom. The family has two rooms for themselves, and share a kitchen, bathroom and a playing room for children with a couple of other families from Ukraine. Liliia's mother Katiia is an economist, and before fleeing the war, worked as a sales manager at a factory manufacturing furniture. The father of the family remains in Ukraine, as at times of war, men aged 18-60 are not allowed to leave the country, under martial law.
