Central American refugees in the U.S.
Add to Cart Add to Lightbox DownloadUpon release from detention by U.S. immigration authorities, an asylum seeker from Central America makes a phone call to her family from a shelter in San Antonio, Texas, on December 1, 2015. The shelter receives women who have fled violence in Central America with their children and were detained by immigration authorities upon their arrival in the United States. Upon release from detention, they are brought to the shelter, which is run by the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) and supported by a coalition of San Antonio churches. Shelter staff and volunteers help the women and children with food, clothing and a secure place to sleep until they can make arrangements for travel onward to stay with relatives elsewhere in the U.S., pending a final decision on their request for asylum.
